Of the new track, lead vocalist Casey Aylward has this to say, ""Spun" was the last song I wrote for the record and also the last song we recorded and put together. I wrote it quickly in the corner of a room I was staying in at the time on my acoustic. Conceptually it's about being uncomfortable and very unhappy in your situation at the time, feeling helpless, feeling like it won't ever end. The video touches on this theme by using the idea of searching for light within a world of darkness. While some choose to accept or live within the blackness, others try to find or create a light to see their way out. Definitely a song that poured out of me, as if I needed it exorcised from me. When it was done I knew it had to be the first song on the record, and I'm happy Shay and Chris shared that vision. I feel like it perfectly introduces what you can expect to hear from the rest of the record, albeit it on a pretty dark note."
Produced by friend and fellow Astronoid member Dan Schwartz, Vattnet is a grand sonic departure from the tremolo-picking, blast beats and guttural vocals of the band’s formative years. The 8 new tracks boldly raise the bar set by both their widely-heralded 2015 sophomore release Settler and their 2013 debut album Sky Swallower, with an aurally diverse blend of melody, heavy angular progressive riffs and clean vocals from Aylward, who stepped into the lead vocal position after the departure of vocalist/guitarist Nick Thornbury.
The new direction is more in tune with progressive metal acts like Rosetta, Intronaut and The Ocean while Aylward’s vocals have hints of Deftones’ Chino Moreno mixed with Robert Smith of The Cure and lyrically touches on topics of deep loss and pain that the band have carried over from their past albums.
Vattnet will be performing a short string of dates in the United States in September with their friends in Less Art. Dates are as follows.
09.14 - New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge
09.15 - Boston, MA @ The Middle East
